This form of service, known as The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, has been sung for more than 80 Christmases at King’s College at Cambridge University in England.  The order was developed by E. M. Milner-White, Dean of King’s College, who drew on several ancient sources.  At King’s College, the service is sung on Christmas Eve, and members of Eton College are invited to participate.
 
The basic structure of the service is quite simple. The good news of Christmas is relayed through nine lessons. Each lesson is then followed by hymns or carols which serve as a commentary on or a response to the lesson. This Festival of Lessons and Carols has been adapted for congregational use.
