MASSES AT MONASH THIS WEEK (CHRISTMAS WEEK):

There will be Mass each morning Monday to Friday in Mannix College chapel at 9.00 am. Come to the College foyer and ring or sms Fr Laurie’s phone: 0439 201 182 and someone will come and open the door for you.

Final Mass for the year on Sunday 1 January 2012 at 5:10pm, Main Chapel, Clayton campus.

Reconciliation: Saturday at 9.30 am

The first Mass at Monash next year will be in the Main Chapel at 5.10 pm on Sunday 12th February.

The first Friday Group meeting next year will be 10th February at 6:30pm onwards in Small Chapel.

The Annual Mass for Altar Servers was celebrated by Archbishop Denis Hart at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, East Melbourne. During the Mass, new members were admitted into the Guild of St. Stephen, including our altar servers: Novia Christina & Yuli Candra.

Practicing Medicine with Integrity

A student seminar was held last 16 April, and an audio recording of the talk by the guest speaker, Dr. John Neil, is available from this site (mp3 format). Dr Neil is currently the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit at Box Hill hospital, and has a long involvement with the Christian Medical and Dental Fellowship of Australia. He voiced opposition to the Abortion Law Reform legislation and its anti-conscience clause in 2008. The speech linked to above is highly recommended.

The function will be held at Mannix College, Monash University (opposite Clayton campus). The seminar is FREE and FOOD & Refreshments provided.

Dr John Neil, a senior Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, has generously agreed to be the guest speaker at our first CDAV/ Medical student function for this year.

He will reflect on his personal experiences as an Obstetrician in light of his faith in Christ and the title of his talk will be: "Practising Medicine with Integrity".

Dr Neil is currently the Head of the O and G unit at Box Hill hospital and has had a long involvement with the Christian Medical and Dental Fellowship of Australia. Dr Neil also publicly and courageously lent his voice in opposition to the Abortion Law Reform legislation and its anti-conscience clause in 2008.

To continue expanding and enhancing Catholics on Campus as an umbrella organisation for all Catholics on all Monash University campuses.
Strengthen the Catholic faith at Monash University.
Encourage and extend out to all Catholics to join our various campus groups.
To encourage and facilitate similar Catholics on Campus activities at various Monash campuses.
Continue to develop the “Catholics at Monash” web site for information, contacts and links.
To encourage Catholic secondary school “transition program” to university – a transition to university for secondary students.
The “transition program” will be conducted with an “orientation” day at Monash University campuses (e.g. September or October of each year).
Notify all Catholic secondary schools via Religious Education co-ordinators of “transition program” and “orientation” day.
New students can join Catholics on Campus groups on the various campuses.
The “transition program” will help develop the following:
- Spiritual development.
- Develop and encourage an ongoing Catholic community fellowship.
- Developing Catholic leadership.
- Mass, Rosary and Bible sharing, Choir, etc.
- Encourage vocations.
- Conduct guest lectures with Catholics Doctor's Association of Victoria and Melbourne Catholic Lawyer's Association.
- Conduct social activities.
- Catholics on Campus can serve as a “pilot” project for other universities.
- Work with implementing similar Catholics on Campus organisations at other universities.

AIMS:

To foster and promote the spiritual, intellectual and general interests of the Catholic community at Monash University.
To provide moral, social, cultural and spiritual support for students and staff.
To engage people in Gospel values and the principles of Catholicism.
To organise regular group discussions on matters concerning the Catholic faith.
To promote mutual understanding among faiths.
To organise lectures, social functions and other activities as the committee may from time to time adopt in keeping with the above objectives.

From Friday 5 June to Sunday 28 June 2009 the Icon Sedes Sapientiae was hosted by Catholics on Campus in the Religious Centre of Monash University's Religious Centre at the Clayton Campus. The Icon was presented as a gift to the University students of the world by Pope John Paul II The Great as a gift to students in The Great Jubilee Year of 2000, when he said:

"I entrust your journey to Mary, Sedes Sapientiae, whose image I entrust to you today, so that she may be welcomed as a teacher and a pilgrim…Mary supported the Apostles with her prayer at the dawn of the evangelisation; may she also help you." (Universities Need Credible Witnesses to Christ, 25 August 2000).

Members of Singles for Christ welcomed the Icon to Monash on Saturday 6 June.

On Sunday 7 June an open invitation was extended to University students throughout Melbourne to greet the Icon's arrival to Melbourne in prayer and adoration culminating in the Sunday evening liturgy in the Monash Religious Centre at a Mass concelebrated by the Vicar for Tertiary Students, Bishop Tim Costelloe S.D.B. and the Monash Chaplain, Father Laurie Foote O.P. We were delighted that our Orthodox brothers and sisters shared the visit of the Icon at their 10a.m. Liturgy that morning in the Religious Centre.

The Icon was taken to Australian Catholic University, St. Patrick's Campus on 10 June and from 12 June to 20 June, Mannix College had the joy of the Icon's presence in their College Chapel where it was venerated by students and staff, a witness to Mary's care and presence in their midst.

On Monday 29 June members of the Australian Catholic Students Association took the Icon on the next stage of its journey to Brisbane where Mary, Sedes Sapientiae, was to be the focal point of their conference from 8-10 July.

The presence of the Icon in our midst is a tribute to the dedication of Richard Houlihan, Co-ordinator of Catholics on Campus, for his dedication and devotion in ensuring that part of the Icon's tour to Australia should be hosted by Monash University.

CoC Delegates Attend Sydney Conference for Youth Leaders

Delegates from the Catholic family of Monash University attended the "Commission for Pastoral Life Youth Leaders Gathering". More than 330 delegates from all over Australia attended the Sydney event, from 21 to 23 November 2008. Plans for youth ministry coordination were drawn up during the gathering.

The Age Polls: Should Catholic hospitals be forced to comply with the new abortion laws?

The Abortion Law Reform bill has not yet been passed by the Upper House (so there's time to contact the Council). Update: this abortion law is about forcing hospitals to refer women seeking abortion to abortion providers. Our Archbishop has spoken out against this. We refer to this as "cooperating with evil", which in itself is a grave and objective evil, given the nature of what is at stake (abortion). The government would use the term "collusion" or "conspiracy" in other situations, but apparently not when it is an abortion.

In any case, the poll as it stands now (11:24 am) is a big "Yes", obviously from non-Catholics who find nothing wrong with the State dictating over the doctrines of the Church while, crying "separation of Church and State" when it suits them. Please visit the poll and make your views count. Sadly, in this day and age, many people actually let polls shape their principles.

Stop the Abortion Law Reform Bill

Marcin has kindly prepared several PDF documents (download via MediaFire) containing contact information about specific members of parliament and the legislative council, as well as letters urging them to oppose the Abortion Law Reform Bill here in Victoria. It is probably preferred that the letters are given a personal touch, but note that whatever is written must be given in charity and respect. These people are not enemies: they are public servants whom we should pray for and assist in their decision-making. Please voice your concerns in the hope that we will influence their understanding. Marcin sends along this explanation for the various documents in the zip file linked to above:

find out what your Legislative Council Region is by seeing "list_of_council_members-3.pdf" (Clayton is in the SouthEastern Region)
open the PDF for your Council Region (western, northern, etc.) and fill out the forms with your Name and Address up the top and Name down the bottom (copy and paste will do the trick) for all FIVE members.
find out who's your Assembly MP by seeing "assembly_members-4.pdf" and filling out and printing ONE of the letters in that PDF

WYD Testimonies

For me it was certainly a foretaste of heaven. Yes there were the challenges and discomforts but existing in a faith filled environment on such a large scale was quite unique and inspiring. One of the speakers summed it up well when he said that the last time we saw so many flags it was because of war this time it was because of peace. I found the depth of the experience to be a solemn one.

WYD was an amazing experience for me. The atmosphere was truly indescribable and the whole week will be one I will never forget. There was time for reflection as well as times to be silly and just have fun. This experience made me appreciate being alive and realizing how lucky each of us are to have so many other people all around the world who care about you enough to give you a big smile or a simple hello or a hug or give you a present from their country or want to have a conversation with you. Everyone was loving being alive and that made each day so special. I can't believe that such an event would add so much more to the way I perceive life. We are but one in a million and yet each of us is unique and special to God. God loves each of us the same and no one escapes his love if they have faith and trust in him. WYD was so thrilling that I will definitely consider attending the next one in Madrid!

I was baptised at the age of 5, since then I loved reading parables, but being raised in a secular family, I only went to church once a year if not less. 13 years later I met a Christian friend who transformed me. He showed me how much more I could do as a Christian. After 5 years of friendship with this person, I now go to church every Sunday and go to confession every week. I feel a lot closer to God, I pray every day and I trust in Him more than ever. It was not an easy journey and a lot of barriers had to be broken down, but I realise how much I would be missing out on if I didn't take on this challenge.

The point of this story is the importance of prayer, even when we don't want to pray. God will transform us and open our hearts if we just let Him. My story is living proof of the power of the Holy Spirit, and I don't plan to stop there, as the Holy Spirit still has a lot of work to do in me. I pray God blesses everyone with this wonderful gift, I know I wouldn't live without it.

Many say that our group would pass for the United Nations, comprising of pilgrims from various origins ie. Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Malta, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Samoa, South Africa and Sri Lanka. As the saying goes – "We are many parts, but we are all one body." Likewise, we are of many countries, but we are all one family. United in ONE faith, we embarked to Sydney on our WYD08 journey.

Our schedule was filled with activities to keep us on our feet. We joined the crowd in the major events, from welcoming the pope at the Sydney Opera House, to the Stations of the Cross on Friday at Barangaroo and not forgetting the Pilgrim Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Randwick Racecourse for the evening vigil and final mass. We also attended catechesis at St Joseph's Church in Belmore and exhibitions, forums and concerts around Sydney. Nevertheless, we still managed to find a quiet time with the Lord, in prayer, reciting the rosary, Taize, Eucharistic adoration and the sacrament of reconciliation.

Things weren't always easy – limited to 3 showers in a school that was accommodating 300 pilgrims; having almost the same meal each day (bread and tuna for lunch, stew for dinner) and the 10km walk to Randwick with a load on our backs (which took its physical toll on some of us). Towards the end of the pilgrimage, a number of us were struck down with flu-like symptoms and fatigue was slowly setting in. But in the midst of these hardships, it was nice to see the group supporting each other, lending a helping hand to the older members and keeping a bright and positive mind throughout the time. True enough, this was all "Part of the Pilgrimage Experience (P.o.P.E.)".

Although everyone is gathered together at one place to celebrate WYD, each pilgrim has a different spiritual experience. Mine just so happened by chance (no..it was not a coincidence, it was God's work) that I was able to really prepare myself and examine my conscience prior to confession. Because of this, I experienced God's forgiveness and love with a whole new perspective and I was truly touched by God's presence through the sacrament of reconciliation. Furthermore, I was comforted that I don't have to journey alone on this pilgrimage. Being away from my family and home has sometimes made me vulnerable to the feeling of loneliness. But through the WYD experience, I felt God's presence through the Holy Spirit, reaffirming that He is with me at all times and to trust in Him. Besides, seeing so many other pilgrims from 'all the ends of the earth' has shown me that truly, I am NOT alone at all.

My feelings throughout the WYD experience are described in several words:

Overwhelming – being in massive crowds of catholic pilgrims from all over the world (especially from places that you would not have thought of eg. Afghanistan, Iceland, Iraq, Tahiti)

Freedom – of being able to sing songs, praise God and chant our support for dear 'Benedetto', as we march in a parade of flags, openly in the streets of Sydney.

Pride - as a Catholic; and for representing my home country (ie Malaysia) at WYD

Joy - of new friendships and of meeting the Pope!!

Blessed – for God has forgiven my sins; and for being empowered with the Holy Spirit

Grateful – to God for keeping us safe throughout this journey; and for giving us great allocated spots during the major events (considering the size of the crowd at Randwick, we were right in front of the stage!!); also grateful to our hosts at St. Joseph's primary school for their splendid hospitality; and to the people of Sydney – for welcoming us with open arms, for their patience (well….we did cause a fair bit of congestion on the public transport), for their friendliness (people were waving at us and greeting us on the trains and on the streets) and for accepting our presence at Sydney

Anticipation – towards the next WYD at Madrid, Spain in 2011 !! (time to start saving up $$)

This has been a week of a lifetime, but it is not over - the pilgrimage continues. For most of us, this is probably the beginning of our journey of faith. I pray that the parish of St. Peter's Church and Catholics on Campus (Monash University) will continue to support the youth and young adults of this parish, in the mission set forth by the Lord.

This is a reflection of WYD '08 from the point of view of a pilgrim who also did some volunteer works.

As I started the journey, all I could think of is my nice and comfy room back at Melbourne. And there was that thought about having cold shower (or not at all for that matter) and sleeping in a large crowded hall all week. Add to all that concerns, I had to do at least three things when I arrived in Sydney on Monday: Pick up my volunteer uniforms, attend the first (and only) logistic volunteer training, and be at my actual shift that day.

I did not spend much time with the group during the week and looking at the photos taken by Victor just made me want to redo the pilgrimage all over again and be with the group the whole week. I guess that is the beauty of volunteering, it somewhat made me feel closer with the group.

During the week, I met some interesting and fantastic fellow volunteers. The funny thing is that I never actually met my logistic supervisor. On Monday (14th) and Tuesday (15th), I checked in before my shift and waited for him/her (yes, I really don't know my supervisor) for two hours with another logistic volunteer. The supervisor seemed to be busy working at a far away venue. Since sitting around that long waiting for him / her everyday is not exactly my idea of volunteering, I managed to get myself something else to do. I worked with the pilgrim packs distribution team on Monday, the information booth team on most of the week, the catering team on Friday, and the crowd marshall team during the stations of the cross on Friday. So basically I've done all kinds of volunteering work, except for logistic! Didn't they tell you that Our Lord has a very good sense of humor?

I helped many pilgrims, mostly by giving them directions and information about WYD events. When I think about it, I did not have any significant knowledge about Sydney at all (it is my first time in Sydney) and the events as well. But there I was, showing them how to get to Barangaroo, Hyde Park, where to get their lunch and dinner; and even telling them that they had to register to attend some events. I believe the lesson is that the kind of tasks that you have at hand and how good your capability of completing them are irrelevant. When the Holy Spirit guides you, you just go with Him. And from my experience, the ways will always be shown to you. Sometimes when you look back at the things that you already accomplished, you would just wonder: How did I do that? It's as simple as that, the Holy Spirit guides us all the time.

So, after 5 days of volunteering, I finally got the time to be with the group at the walk / pilgrimage to Randwick racecourse. I had never done a 9km walk before and doing it with the group in the middle of tens of thousands of people with the same faith made it a really breathtaking spiritual experience. We heard chantings in various languages, saw numerous symbols of devotions and 100 or more different flags. The spirit of togetherness in the air was beyond amazing.

And then we arrived at Randwick on Saturday afternoon, where we had our sleep out. We had the spiritually touching evening vigil, slept under the stars at one digit degree, and had the closing mass on Sunday morning. At the same day, we said goodbye to Sydney, packed our things and boarded the train. Back at Melbourne, we were physically exhausted but I truely felt the presence of the Holy Spirit within us. I believe everyone has got different blessings from Him, depending on what kind of strengthening that each of us need. Looking back at all the things that we experienced, that week will be one of the milestones in my life. I wouldn't trade it with anything else.

I would like to mention the St. Joseph Primary school at Belmore in Sydney, where our group stayed during the week. The people there, especially Greg and Patricia, had been so supportive and helpful to us. They literally provided us with everything and were always there for us. I have the deepest gratitude for them. I need to add that we had hot shower all week and the rooms where we slept in were really comfortable, all beyond my initial imagination. The officials of WYD also deserved many thanks from us. They have made all of the WYD events possible with their hard work. Last but not least, thank you so much to all Sydneysiders for having us and pilgrims from all over the world. You have a truly beautiful city and we really enjoyed your hospitality.

To the members of my group, it's been a blessing going to the WYD with all of you. Though I had a short time with you, I enjoyed every second of it. All the laughters, adventures, discussions, and even the songs we sang together are special. Our Lord always has the element of beauty and elegance in all of his creations and our group is no exception.

The WYD might be over, but we should keep the power we received with us and nurture it. Let us always listen to the Holy Spirit's guidance and spread God's love anywhere we go.

Catholics on Campus organised a day of retreat on 14th September at Tarrawarra Abbey in the Yarra Valley. For most of us it was the first opportunity to visit an Abbey and meet the monks.
We arrived in time for the 10a.m. community Mass after which we enjoyed morning tea with other members of the congregation including the monks.
Our retreat giver, Br. Bernard Redden, led us in two sessions where we reflected on, and shared together, the experience of how God reveals Himself and calls us in the ordinary events of our life.
It proved to be an opportunity for us to grow together as a group and to take in the atmosphere of the prayer and peace of the Abbey amid such beautiful surroundings.

As Vice-Chancellor, it is my pleasure to welcome the World Youth Day Cross and Icon to Monash University. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the visitors to Monash, and in particular, the volunteers involved in the pilgrimage as the Cross makes its way to the 12^th World Youth Day, which will be held in Sydney in July.

Fr. Peter Knowles, R.I.P.

We wish to advise the death of Fr. Peter Knowles O.P. first full-time chaplain to Monash University and from 1981 - 1989 second Master of Mannix College. Fr. Knowles spent twenty-five years at Monash during which time he saw Monash through the Vietnam War and its aftermath and high political debate. The chaplaincy office was situated in the Union Building and a great friendship existed between the chaplains and staff and students of the Union. He was drawn to young people. Perplexed and troubled undergraduates benefited from his encouragement and wisdom and even today many people speak of the profound influence he on on their development as young adults, some testifying that he changed their lives around. He enjoyed theatre, music and good food and possessed a wry sense of humour. Nothing seemed to disturb him.

Fr. Knowles never took out a degree but he was highly respected by the academic staff as well as students for his learning, friendship and pastoral care to all. As a young man he set out after studies at Xavier College Kew to travel the world seeking his vocation. This search took him to the Abbey of Gethsamane in Kentuckey (which was home to the famous Thomas Merton) then on to the Carthusians of Parkminster England (similar to the monks of the film The Great Silence). Not finding his vocation in either of these communities he returned to Australia where he spent time as a jackeroo before joining the Dominicans at East Camberwell. He finally found his spiritual home amongst the Russian Catholic community who worship according to the Byzantine rite. He mastered several ancient and modern eastern languages, in addition to the modern western languages that he already possessed.

A memorial service will be held at 12.10p.m. on Wednesday, 9th April, in the main chapel at the Monash Religious Centre. All are welcome to attend to pray for a chaplain who made a dedicated contribution to the Monash community during his years of service at the Clayton campus. As a former Master of Mannix College, it would be wonderful to see current day students attend this memorial Mass in his remembrance.

Fr. Peter Knowles, first chaplain of Monash Catholics

Peter Thomas Knowles was born on 12 February 1927 in Adelaide, fifth and youngest child of Frederick and Frances Knowles (née Moroney). The Knowles family came to Australia as immigrants from New York at the turn of the nineteenth century. Frederick and Frances were married at St Laurence's Priory church, North Adelaide, by the then Prior, Fr Robert Spence OP, who went on to become Archbishop of Adelaide. Peter's birth certificate states his father's occupation as a hotel keeper in Port Lincoln.

The family moved to Melbourne, where his father died in 1931. Peter received the sacrament of confirmation at Our Lady of Victories church, Camberwell, in 1938 and attended the Jesuit Fathers' Xavier College at Kew between 1941 and 1946.

On completing his schooling, he travelled through Europe and America with a keen interest in the monastic way of life. From June 1947 he spent one and a half years at the Cistercian Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, USA (whose most famous son is Thomas Merton), and from February 1949 a similar amount of time at St Hugh's Priory, the Carthusian monastery at Parkminster in England.

Not finding his vocation in either place, Peter returned to Australia and spent a brief period working as a jackeroo. Back in Melbourne, while living at Hawthorn, he applied to join the Australian Province of the Dominican Order at the end of 1950 and was accepted. He underwent a novitiate at St Dominic's Priory, East Camberwell, and was professed on 27 February 1952. He had been given the religious name 'Henry' but reverted to his given name later in life. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies at St Dominic's and then at the Order's theology house in Sydney, Holy Name Priory at Wahroonga. He was ordained to the priesthood on 18 December 1956.

Soon after ordination he was sent to New Zealand as chaplain to the Catholic Teachers Training College in Auckland. He resided with the Dominican community in the suburb of Remuera. He also taught theology and philosophy to religious' sisters in spiritual formation and professional training as teachers.

In the early 1960s he returned to Australia and became chaplain at the University of New England and the Teachers' College at Armidale, northern New South Wales. In 1964 he moved again but retained the same kind of apostolate when he was appointed as the first full-time Catholic chaplain at Melbourne's recently-established second university, Monash University, located in the south-eastern suburb of Clayton. Initially based at St Dominic's Priory, he later took up residence privately in Clayton and moved again to Mannix College when it was opened in 1969. The College was a residential facility affiliated with the University, established by the Archdiocese of Melbourne and managed by Dominican friars.

Father Peter's connection with Monash University lasted for a quarter of a century. He was much respected by academic and administrative staff and was approached for advice by vice-chancellors, heads of faculties and others. He was drawn to young people. Perplexed and troubled undergraduates benefited from his kindness, compassion, generosity and encouragement, as well as his spiritual wisdom, intellectual guidance and wide-ranging personal culture. Today a considerable number of people speak of the profound influence that Father Peter had on their development as young adults, some testifying that their lives were turned around. He had a gift for warm friendship, assisted by a lively affability, the enjoyment of the good things of life, the love of literature and history and a wry sense of humour.

As a schoolboy, Peter had become interested in all things Russian and in the 1960s he gravitated towards the spirituality, theology and liturgy of eastern Christianity. He was asked to become assistant chaplain to Melbourne's Russian Catholic community who worshipped according to the Byzantine rite. He mastered several ancient and modern eastern languages, in addition to the modern western European languages that he already possessed. He wrote several articles for scholarly journals and popular magazines and was much in demand as a speaker.

In the 1970s Father Peter served on the Provincial Council of the Australasian Dominicans and the Monash University Religious Centre Advisory Committee. He also functioned as Acting Master of Mannix College in the mid-1970s when the Master, Dr Laurence Fitzgerald, was absent overseas for a sabbatical year in Canada. Later in the same decade he also served as Acting Dean of the College. Hence he was well positioned in terms of administrative experience when he was appointed Master in 1981.

During Father Peter's nine-year term of office as head, Mannix College enjoyed consistently high occupancy levels. The 1980s saw a reform of the College constitution to reflect changes over the previous 20 years and a consolidation of the structures of student leadership and the tutorial programme to enhance the provision of pastoral care and academic assistance. As Master, Peter strongly encouraged the cultural and intellectual aspects of College life. The annual John Henry Newman Lecture was inaugurated. He supported the foundation of the Mannix College Cultural Society and its programme of chamber music, poetry reading and dramatics. The students' annual magazine, the Gryphon, was launched during Peter's period in office as was the Mannix College Dramatic Society which each year presented a theatrical performance. The College conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society was re-established, with the accent on refugee re-settlement. Father Peter set a high priority on forging close relations with Monash University through regular faculty night dinners held at the College and inviting members of the University to participate in the College's intellectual and cultural life. In view of his interests in eastern Europe he maintained excellent contacts with the Department of Slavonic Languages.

In the period from the 1960s to the 1980s Father Peter made several trips to Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia,Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and other eastern Europe countries to study the life of the church there, especially in countries burdened by Communist repression. He often used his own resources to assist materially members of an harassed and impoverished underground clergy. At the conclusion of one such tour, he reported to the Vatican's Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity on the state of Christianity in the Soviet Union. In mid-89 he attended a conference on the Russian apostolate organised by the Pontifical Russian College in Rome.

Father Peter completed his term as head of Mannix College at the end of 1989. He hoped to be able to devote more of his time to the study of the oriental churches and, to that end, commenced a sabbatical year at the International Russian Institute, Rome, where he was already well known on account of his expert knowledge of the Russian language and eastern Christian culture.

Unfortunately, this opportunity was suddenly cut short by a serious deterioration of his health which necessitated his hospitalisation in Italy for a considerable period of time. On his return to Australia and better health, he spent most of the 1990s residing at the Russian Catholic Centre at Kew as an assistant priest. In 2001 he visited the Holy Resurrection Monastery, Newberry Springs, California, founded by a friend and former Australian Dominican, Father Nicholas Zachariadis. The following year he moved into residence at St Dominic's Priory in Melbourne. It had been arranged for him to live and assist pastorally at the Ukrainian cathedral in North Melbourne but that plan, too, was brought to an abrupt end when Peter suffered a serious accident. The rest of his life was marked by chronic poor health.

Late in 2002 he was assigned to St Laurence's Priory in his home town of Adelaide where he was given the conventual offices of librarian and chronicler. In 2006 Bishop Peter Stasiuk, Eparch for Ukrainian Catholics in Australia and New Zealand, created him an Archpriest by the conferral of a special cross in recognition of his many years of service to Australian Catholics of the oriental rites. Initially, Peter tried to provide some ministerial assistance to the Ukrainian community in Adelaide but this soon became impossible as his physical well-being declined sharply. He was cared for in his final illness by his Dominican brothers at St Laurence's, Mrs Carmel Rolevink, the Priory's house keeper, and Mr Andrew Quinlan, a long-standing close friend of Peter's from Monash days.

Fr Peter Knowles died in the early hours of 11 March 2008. He was 81. The funeral liturgy took place on 14 March at St Laurence's church and was celebrated in the Byzantine-rite by Bishop Stasiuk, assisted by ten Dominican and eastern-rite priests. His earthly remains were laid to rest in the Dominican section of the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
